The City of Raleigh is commemorating Fair Housing Month by reflecting on the progress made in addressing housing disparities and the challenges that still lie ahead. In a press release, the City highlighted the importance of the Fair Housing Act of 1968, which made discrimination in housing transactions illegal, as the foundation for ongoing efforts to promote fair and affordable housing.

"April is a time to celebrate the efforts to remove inequities in housing, while acknowledging there is much more work to be done," said a City representative.

Over the past year, the Raleigh City Council has taken significant steps to support fair and affordable housing in the city. Actions include approving hundreds of affordable units, funding for the preservation of existing affordable units, and approving rezonings for the construction of affordable housing. The City has also allocated funds for emergency shelters, land sales for affordable housing developments, and gap funding for affordable housing projects.

"The approval of each action adds a piece to the affordable housing puzzle, involving various stakeholders such as community organizations, state and federal agencies, and local governments," the City official added.

In addition to these actions, the City provides a Homeowner Assistance Program to bridge the homeownership gap by offering zero-interest, deferred loans for down payments and closing costs. The program also includes home-buying courses to educate and assist prospective buyers.

To celebrate Fair Housing Month, City Manager Marchell Adams-David will be participating in a reading of a children's book at the Tarboro Road Community Center on April 27. The City is also hosting a Fair Housing Training Seminar on May 8 to provide City staff and local agency members with a better understanding of fair housing principles.

"The City of Raleigh is committed to working with its partners to address housing issues and strengthen neighborhoods," the City representative emphasized.
